How is volumetric weight calculated?

Carriers charge for the space a shipment takes up, not only for what it weighs. Volumetric weight turns volume into kilograms: multiply length × width × height in centimetres, then divide by the carrier's divisor.

Air cargo normally uses 6000 (1 m³ = 167 kg). Express couriers usually use 5000 (1 m³ = 200 kg). The chargeable weight is whichever is higher: the actual weight or the volumetric weight.

For sea freight (LCL) the rule is 1 m³ = 1,000 kg. You pay per freight ton, which is the larger of the volume in m³ and the weight in tonnes.

Example: a 60 × 40 × 50 cm carton weighing 12 kg has a volumetric weight of 60 × 40 × 50 ÷ 6000 = 20 kg by air, so you are charged for 20 kg.

Results are estimates. Each carrier sets its own divisor and rounding rules; confirm with your forwarder before booking.
